"Animal Kingdom" -(2010) - A young man (James Frecheville) is fatefully thrust into a world of violence and mistrust when he finds himself in league with a crew of criminal Uncles (Sullivan Stapleton, Ben Mendelsohn and Luke Ford) puppeteered by his estranged Grandmother (Jacki Weaver). Fans of crime-dramas should definitely seek out this low-key Australian release- it's one of the best films of 2010.
Joel Edgerton (Warrior), as the armed gang's conflicted leader, leaves the narrative rather early, while Guy Pearce's (L.A. Confidential, Memento) detective is utilized sparingly- don't let that deter you from giving this a try, as this film is as tense, involving and ultimately heartbreaking as any crime story released in the last decade.
Frecheville is the perfect embodiment of the phrase "still waters run deep", while Ben Mendelsohn's (The Place Beyond The Pines) conniving bastard will undoubtedly leave an impression. The acting is excellent across the board, though Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) commands her every scene as one of the most sinister Grandmas to have ever slithered across the silver screen.
