"
Animal Kingdom" -(2010) - A young man (James Frecheville) is fatefully thrust into a world of violence and mistrust when he finds himself in league with a crew of criminal Uncles (Sullivan Stapleton, Ben Mendelsohn and Luke Ford) puppeteered by his estranged Grandmother (Jacki Weaver). Fans of crime-dramas should definitely seek out this low-key Australian release- it's one of the best films of 2010.
Joel Edgerton (
Warrior), as the armed gang's conflicted leader, leaves the narrative rather early, while Guy Pearce's (
L.A. Confidential,
Memento) detective is utilized sparingly- don't let that deter you from giving this a try, as this film is as tense, involving and ultimately heartbreaking as any crime story released in the last decade.
Frecheville is the perfect embodiment of the phrase "
still waters run deep", while Ben Mendelsohn's (
The Place Beyond The Pines) conniving bastard will undoubtedly leave an impression. The acting is excellent across the board, though Jacki Weaver (
Silver Linings Playbook) commands her every scene as one of the most sinister Grandmas to have ever slithered across the silver screen.
