One of my most anticipated films of 2011 is "Another Earth," which I've discussed here a time or two before. Fox Searchlight acquired distribution rights back in January at Sundance, where "Another Earth" won the
Alfred P. Sloan Prize and got lots of buzz from cinephiles for its subtly unnerving philosophical exploration of a classic science fiction prototype: the impending collision of our planet with another object that's heading right for us.
But "Another Earth" is no "2012," and the extraterrestrial object in question is spelled right out in the title: a seemingly exact clone of our planet, hovering in the not-so-distant heavens, and apparently populated by second versions of all of us. Star Brit Marling, an ethereal beauty whose face alone is transfixing, also co-wrote "Another Earth," working with director Mike Cahill on the screenplay and imbuing the movie with a personal undertone from square one. Fox Searchlight also picked up Marling's other Sundance entry, "The Sound of My Voice," which she also wrote and in which she plays a cult leader. While that film isn't likely to show up in theaters until next year, there's no doubt that Brit Marling is the major new multi-hyphenate talent of 2011, a rare debut that doubles as both on-screen ingenue and strikingly intellectual writer and announces a serious player in both realms.
In any case, "Another Earth" opens at Cinema 21 this Friday. I'll be seeing it sometime this weekend with Andrew, and neither of us can wait...the trailer has been playing on loop since its stunning premiere a few months ago. Check it out below, and get excited. Finally, doomsday is upon us. Thank you, gods of cinema, for "Another Earth" is almost here.
