Golden Globes 2020: Taylor Swift to Beyonce, What You Didn’t See on TV - Variety

Posted: 06 Jan 2020 11:45 AM PST

Often, the best moments at the Golden Globes don't even make the telecast.

When you're inside the Beverly Hilton, where the ceremony takes place, Hollywood's first awards show of the year can feel like attending a high school homecoming game. There's free-flowing booze. There's lots of hugging and talking between the plays. And there's a mad beeline to meet the most popular kids — Meryl Streep, Ellen DeGeneres and Renee Zellweger.

Here are the 13 biggest secrets from inside the ballroom at this year's ceremony.

1. Who gets the best and worst seats?
There are multiple tiers of seating at the Golden Globes. The biggest A-list stars — Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Robert De Niro, Jennifer Aniston and Taylor Swift — are all seated on the floor of the Beverly Hilton ballroom. Then there's a next tier — Billy Porter, Olivia Colman, Bong Joon Ho — who are in a second row of tables, farther away from the stage. Before the show started, Gillian Anderson was talking to DeGeneres, the recipient of the Carol Burnett Award, who had one of the best seats in the house. Anderson pointed up to the sky, to joke that her table was far away. And Quentin Tarantino, who had a very good seat, was heard complaining that all the producers and financiers who actually got the movies made were forced to sit in the back of the room — beyond the second-tier, there's a third- and fourth-tier (several steps up) for the less famous attendees.

2. There was no meat served
This year's Golden Globes had its first all-vegan menu, which was an idea that came from best actor in a drama winner Joaquin Phoenix ("Joker"), an animal rights activist. When guests arrived inside the Globes, instead of the usual dinner of steak or fish, they were served chilled golden beet soup, oyster mushroom "scallops" with mushroom risotto and a chocolate opera dome for dessert. There was no meat backstage either, where the finger-food appetizers at the bar consisted of vegetarian sandwiches.

3. Everybody wants to say hi to Meryl
In the 20 minutes before the show starts, the floor of the ballroom is a mosh pit — as every famous person on the planet tries to say hi to other famous people. But obviously, there's no one more bowed down to than Streep, recipient of 32 Golden Globe nominations. As Streep made her way to her table, she was first greeted by Michelle Pfeiffer and her husband David E. Kelley (who wrote "Big Little Lies"). Next, she said hello to Noah Baumbach, who is in a relationship with her "Little Women" director Greta Gerwig. She hugged Billy Porter. Finally, she stopped by Helen Mirren's table. Streep leaned over to talk to Mirren, who was seated and pleased to see her good friend.

4. Speaking of Noah and Greta…
The directing couple behind "Marriage Story" (his) and "Little Women" (hers) were also popular, getting well wishes as they moved around the room. As they navigated through the crowd, Gerwig held Baumbach's hand and directed him: "This way!"

5. Hug a Celebrity
When Saoirse Ronan saw Margot Robbie before the show, they hugged it out.

6. Quentin Tarantino scared Al Pacino
Tarantino grabbed Pacino's shoulder to say hello, but the gesture made the "Irishman" actor jump. "Sorry I didn't mean to startle you," Tarantino said.

7. Taylor Swift brought boyfriend Joe Alwyn as her date
Swift, who was nominated for writing the song "Beautiful Ghosts" from "Cats," brought boyfriend Joe Alwyn as her date, a rare public appearance for the private couple. As they spoke to a guest, Warren Beatty and Sacha Baron Cohen, who were nearby, literally kissed each other's hands.

8. Charlize Theron needed a martini
Just as the show was about to begin, Charlize Theron was spotted rushing to her seat from the bar holding a full martini glass. How else is one expected to make it through the three-hour-plus ceremony? Later on, Theron, who was nominated for best actress in a drama for "Bombshell," introduced Tom Hanks, the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award.

9. Beyonce and Jay-Z arrived late
About an hour into the ceremony, there was a stir in the ballroom as Beyonce descended the steps just as Kate McKinnon was beginning to introduce DeGeneres. But the Globes don't allow anyone to sit during a televised speech, and not even Beyonce was granted an exception. The couple stood for a minute or two, waiting for McKinnon to finish speaking. They finally took their seat when the lights dimmed and the clip reel played of DeGeneres' greatest TV moments.

10. Jennifer Lopez left early
Lopez was considered a favorite in the best supporting actress race for her performance in "Hustlers," but instead Laura Dern ("Marriage Story") took that prize. After Lopez was done presenting, she bailed from the Globes before the final few categories, including best motion picture drama, were announced.

11. The award for the biggest standing ovation goes to…
DeGeneres, Tom Hanks, Elton John (who won best original song for "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" from "Rocketman") and Joaquin Phoenix all received the biggest standing ovations as they accepted their Golden Globes. Michelle Williams, who gave a politically charged speech when she won best actress in a limited series for "Fosse/Verdon," energized the crowd. Ricky Gervais started off strong, with rolls of laughter inside the ballroom during his opening monologue, but his later jokes throughout the ceremony — especially one about women directors — fell flat.

12. Renee Zellweger was nervous
In the middle of the show, Zellweger confessed to Variety that she was nervous. Although she'd won three Golden Globes before, she said that her last appearance at the telecast was 17 years ago for "Cold Mountain." But she had no reason for any jitters. At the end of the night, she picked up her fourth Golden Globe statuette for best actress in a drama for "Judy." Ironically, she and "Joker" star Joaquin Phoenix got up and talked to each other in the last commercial before both their wins. It turned out to be good luck for both of them.

13. Must love this dog
Finally, as A-list celebrities made their way inside the Golden Globes, they were greeted by Keira. This Dutch Shepherd was tasked with the important role of being this year's bomb-sniffing dog.

Golden Globes: Beyonce opts out of Joaquin Phoenix ovation - Daily Mail

Posted: 06 Jan 2020 01:36 AM PST

Beyonce was slammed on Twitter for being pretty much the only person who didn't stand for Joaquin Phoenix when he won a Golden Globe and she didn't.

The 38-year-old singer's decision to remain seated certainly at the event, held at the Beverly Hilton hotel on Sunday, really caused quite a stir.

Joaquin, 45, won Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for Joker and the singer, who arrived an hour late, made a silent statement about her views.

Golden Globes 2020: 'That's just poor sportsmanship': Beyonce is slammed for failing to give Joaquin Phoenix a standing ovation when he won a gong on Sunday at the Beverly Hilton hotel

Twitter's Sam Stryker, shared a picture of the moment and wrote: 'Beyoncé sitting during the standing ovation for Joaquin Phoenix's win is the type of energy I want to see from everyone in 2020.'

Beyonce herself, had been up for Best Original Song - Motion Picture, for her The Lion King track Spirit, but she lost out to Rocketman, for the song, (I'm Gonna) Love Me Again, Rocketman.

Earlier in the night, she failed to walk the red carpet during the Globes and turned up one hour late.

Others wrote on Twitter: '@Beyonce You're a joke for not standing up for Joaquin Phoenix. Understandable to make a statement. But that's just poor sportsmanship for someone that actually deserved recognition. You're entitled and arrogant. And as an actress you're a joke. Smh. You ought to apologize to him.'

'Beyoncé sitting during the standing ovation for Joaquin Phoenix's win is the type of energy I want to see from everyone in 2020.'

'Beyoncé isn't anyone important. I'm happy Joaquin won!'

'Yes, that is Joaquin Phoenix, who won a Golden Globe tonight for his role as the Joker in 'Joker', something Beyoncé did not do.'

Others didn't have a problem with it and wrote:

'Hoes mad because Beyonce didnt stand for Joaquin Phoenix but they fail to realize it was literally out of respect. Her big ass dress would've blocked the view and distracted from his moment. Yall are disgusting.'

'Joaquin Phoenix just did a speech about global warming and how celebrities should start doing changes themselves personally instead of putting the responsibility in other people and then clean their hands. But somehow Beyonce not giving him a standing ovation is more important...'

Beyonce might have skipped the red carpet, but she totally stole the show when she arrived at the Golden Globes!

She looked every bit as glamorous as you'd expect, wearing a custom-made creation by Schiaparelli, featuring a plunging neckline, a dramatic train and some seriously statement gold puff sleeves. Add in a pair of dazzling earrings and we're big fans of this look!

We love the contrast created between the sleek black lower half of the dress and the voluminous metallic shoulders. The sheer opera gloves are a nice touch too.

It was made just for Queen Bey so, unfortunately, we can't buy the very same style, so instead we've rounded up the best alternatives for you in our edit below.

This dress by Club L is our favorite, or you could team this House of CB top with a high-waist maxi skirt to channel the superstar singer?

'Ii know y'all are not hating on beyoncé just because she didn't stand up for joaquin when he won get over yourselves.'

The Joker has become the highest box office earning R-rated film of all-time: Joker.

Joaquin showed that he still has a penchant for mischief as he kept the censors busy with his profanity-laden acceptance speech which began: 'Contrary to popular belief, I don't want to rock the boat. But the boat is f***ing rocked!'

He went on to address the fires in Australia and ongoing climate crisis as he urged Hollywood to do better like 'not taking privates to Palm Springs.'

Phoenix then got choked up while mentioning fiancée Rooney Mara and those in attendance as he ended his speech: 'Rooney, I love you. I'm so grateful for this night and all of you. Thank you.'

Joker follows mentally troubled comedian Arthur Fleck who is mistreated by society leading him into a downward spiral with the eventual path of becoming his super-villain alter-ego.

Meanwhile, it has been 16 years since Renee Zellweger came home with a Golden Globe and it has been even longer for Brad Pitt who last won in 1996.

But the two veteran stars changed their fortunes in yet another great Hollywood comeback story.

The 56-year-old actor earned Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture at the star-studded event held at the Beverly Hills Hilton on Sunday night before his film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood earned top honor Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

In her speech she showed respect to her fellow nominees as she said: 'Well hi, everybody. It's nice to see you. You all look pretty good, 17 years later. Thank you to the HFPA for inviting me back to the family reunion, especially with all these extraordinary ladies this year.

'Your work moves me, and I've been cheering for y'all from theater seats for a long time.'

Judy follows legendary performer Judy Garland after she arrives in London in the winter of 1968 to perform a series of sold out concert.

Pitt beat out A-list talent including: Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood), Anthony Hopkins (The Two Popes), Al Pacino (The Irishman), and Joe Pesci (The Irishman).

His big award was one of three earned by Once Upon A Time In Hollywood including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

Producer David Heyman accepted the prize as he revealed that director and writer Quentin Tarantino told him he would be representing the cast and crew on the grand stage as he said: 'Quentin is nothing if unpredictable. A few seconds ago he told me I was going to speak.'

Tarantino also won for Best Screenplay earlier in the night.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood tells the story of TV star Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Pitt), who make their way around an industry they hardly recognize anymore.

Sam Mendes' war epic 1917 was the top winner in the dramatic film categories as it earned the last award of the night: Best Motion Picture – Drama.

The film that follows two young British soldiers during the First World War who were given an impossible mission beat out critically-acclaimed films: The Irishman, Marriage Story, Joker, and The Two Popes.

British filmmaker Mendes, 53, also won Best Director – Motion Picture earlier in the night.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge was also one of the biggest winners of the night on the television end as she took home two top awards for Fleabag.

As former US President Barack Obama recently put the BBC/Amazon show on his list of favorite movies and music of 2019, the 34-year-old British star made a hilarious joke for fans while accepting one of the top honors of the night; Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.

During her speech, she referenced a racy scene from the first season of the groundbreaking series in which her character masturbated to Obama delivering a keynote speech to Parliament in 2011.

She said: 'Personally, I'd like to thank Obama for putting us on his list and as some of you may know, he's always been on mine. And if you don't get that joke, watch season one of Fleabag really, really quickly! Thank you so much.'

It was yet another milestone night for the star as Waller-Bridge also earned Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for the comedy series.

During that speech, the star paid tribute to co-star Andrew Scott when she first hit the podium to accept her award.

After celebrating with a kiss on the cheek during the announcement, the writer, director and actress dedicated the win to Scott as she joked that the 43-year-old Irish actor; 'could have chemistry with a pebble.'

Flower power: Laura Dern was also a big winner as she won Best Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture for her role in Netflix's A Marriage Story
Tough: The 52-year-old actress beat out top-tier talent including Jennifer Lopez who has received plenty of buzz for her role in Hustlers along with Margot Robbie (Bombshell), Kathy Bates (Richard Jewell), and Annette Bening (The Report)

She said: 'Oh my God. Thank you so much to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for this, it's really heavy and cool.

'This really comes down to Andrew Scott really because that man, there was a lot of talk about the chemistry between us in the show but he could have chemistry with a pebble and Id loved being Andrew's pebble in this, thanks for bringing so much fire to this season.'

She faced heavy-competition including: Christina Applegate (Dead to Me), Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Kirsten Dunst (On Becoming a God in Central Florida), and Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll).

Waller-Bridge portrays the titular character in the groundbreaking series - which she adapted from an award-winning play - as it follows a young woman trying to cope with life in London while coming to terms with a recent tragedy.

It was a big night for the Fleabag family as Olivia Colman earned Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama for The Crown.

She said: 'For the last year I feel like I've been living someone else's life and now I feel like I'm winning someone else's award.'

Earlier in the night, Russell Crowe was absent as he was announced as the winner of the Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television award.

Then 55-year-old actor was given the honor for his work portraying controversial Fox News executive Roger Ailes in Showtime limited series The Loudest Voice.

However he opted not to attend the gala as he stayed in Australia, where he has lived most of his life, to aid with the wildfires that have ravaged the country.

He did, however, send a very pointed statement about climate change which presenter Jennifer Aniston read.

It said: 'Make no mistake. The tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate change-based. We need to act based on science, move our global workforce to renewable energy and respect our planet for the unique & amazing place it is.'

Australia's wildfires have burned about 12.35 million acres of land and destroyed over 1,400 homes.  The death toll has reached 24 people.

Crowe was up against against Sam Rockwell (Fosse/Verdon), Christopher Abbott (Catch-22), Jared Harris (Chernobyl) and Sacha Baron Cohen (The Spy).

In seven-part limited series, The Loudest Voice, Crowe portrayed the now-late Ailes who founded Fox News and focuses on the decade in which he arguably became the Republican Party's de facto leader and sexual harassment accusations which eventually brought his career to and end.

Succession was named Best Television Series - Drama.

The HBO series beat out competition from Big Little Lies, The Crown, Killing Eve, and The Morning Show to take the coveted honor at the annual ceremony.

Showrunner Jesse Armstrong by a number of members of cast and crew of the show but gave thanks on behalf of the whole team as he said: 'Thank you very much, to the HFPA, to HBO for their tremendous support.

'For everyone else working on the show, it's a TV show and I'm here as a representative to represent all of us, so if you've ever appeared on the call sheet or titles of Succession, congratulations, we've won a Golden Globe.'

Stellan Skarsgård earned  Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for his work on HBO limited series Chernobyl.

The 68-year-old Swedish actor cut his speech short as he paid tribute to the make-up artist who created his eyebrows as quipped: '"Stellan, I've seen so many films with you but I never remember your face." And I realised it was because I don't have any eyebrows, nobody can tell if I'm angry or surprised, it's not like Colin Farrell. You can tell if he's angry 20 miles away. So for this film, Daniel Park made a couple of eyebrows for me and...'

Ramy Yusef was the first to earn a win at the event as he was presented Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for his work in Hulu series Ramy.

He's back: Ricky Gervais opened up the show with his signature controversial brand of comedy

He's back: Ricky Gervais opened up the show with his signature controversial brand of comedy

The first-time nominee joked he was not only unrecognizable to anyone in the audience, but his mother had wanted him to lose to The Kominsky Method's Michael Douglas, who was also on the shortlist alongside Barry's Bill Hader, Paul Rudd (Living With Yourself), and Ben Platt (The Politician).

Director and writer Bong Joon Ho accepted Best Motion Picture, Foreign Language for Parasite.

Ricky Gervais opened up the show with his signature controversial brand of comedy as he blasted 'woke' Hollywood for being hypocritical and told them to 'collect your award and f**k off.'

During his monologue, Gervais makes a pointed remark about Jeffrey Epstein while comparing the Netflix show Afterlife to the three-hour long award ceremony.

'[Afterlife] is a show about a man who wants to kill himself because his wife died of cancer and it's still more fun than this. Spoiler alert, season two is on the way so he didn't kill himself...just like Jeffrey Epstein,' he said to the gasping audience.

'Shut up,' he says, 'I know he's your friend, but I don't care.'

Gervais then cautioned the star-studded crowd against making their acceptance speeches political.

'You say you're woke, but the companies you work for are unbelievable. Apple, Amazon, Disney - If ISIS started a streaming service you'd call your agent wouldn't you. So if you do win an award tonight don't use it as a platform to make a political speech, he said.

He also claimed that Apple, who began their streaming site this year, used 'sweatshops' to make produce their products.

'You're in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg. So if you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent and your god and then f**k off.'

Gervais' joke was met with laughter, but may have ruffled Apple's Tim Cook as the CEO sat in the audience Sunday night.

It is the fifth time the 58-year-old comedian has emceed the gala as he has done previously from 2010 to 2012 and once again in 2016.

Tom Hanks and Ellen DeGeneres also received special honors for their work in their respective fields.

Hanks, 63, earned the Cecil B. DeMille Award which is an accolade for the film industry.

He has won four Golden Globes including for his acting in Big, Philadelphia, and Forrest Gump along with his directing for HBO miniseries Band Of Brothers.

DeGeneres, 61, earned the Carol Burnett Award which is the television equivalent of the DeMille Award but focuses on television.

The talk show host has won multiple Emmys and nominated for three Golden Globes. She has hosted her talk show - The Ellen DeGeneres Show - since 2003.

  • In a moment that shocked the internet, Beyoncé and Jay-Z arrived mid-show.
  • Beyoncé was nominated for best original song in a motion picture for "Spirit" from Lion King: The Gift.

Leave it to Queen Bey to pull off a fashionably late award show arrival.

To the utter delight of literally everyone, Beyoncé and Jay-Z made a surprise appearance at the 77th Annual Golden Globes after it looked like they'd be skipping out on the ceremony. Though they didn't walk the red carpet, in the middle of comedian Kate McKinnon's introduction speech for Ellen DeGeneres' Carol Burnett Award, the camera quickly switched to a shot of the famous couple standing in the audience. Bey wore a golden gown with trendy voluminous sleeves, while her husband rocked a sleek tux.

It was a blink and you'll miss it moment, but leave it to Twitter to immediately take notice with some hilarious reactions.

"that one second clip of beyonce," said one user. Another? "Someone get up and give BEYONCÉ a seat."

And our personal favorite? "@Beyonce and Jay-Z just walked in. They're waiting until Kate McKinnon finishes speaking to take their seats. Is their bodyguard carrying bottles of alc for them?" That would honestly be the icing on the cake on an absolutely epic undercover entrance.

So why is Bey at the Golden Globes? "Spirit" from the Lion King: The Gift album soundtrack is nominated for best original song in a motion picture. Her fellow nominees are "Stand Up" from Harriet; Taylor Swift's "Beautiful Ghosts" from Cats; "I'm Gonna Leave Me Again" in Rocket Man; and Fr0zen II's "Into the Unknown."

Does the Homecoming director's surprise appearance mean she's taking home tonight's win? We'll just have to wait and see...

At the Wild and Unpredictable Golden Globes, Elton John Reigns Over Beyonce and Taylor Swift - Billboard

If you were keeping score at home, the correct answer was nine minutes. That's how long it took host Ricky Gervais to make his first Cats joke during his searing monologue at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards. It landed after brutally hilarious cuts at Felicity Huffman, Joe Pesci and Leonardo DiCaprio. "We got to see James Corden as a fat pussy," Gervais sniped. Beat. "He was also in Cats, but no one saw that." Of course, a poke at the much-maligned epic musical fail was as inevitable as a Meryl Streep reaction shot. But the Golden Globes doesn't do stuffy and predictable. And Cats double-entendres aside, the 77th edition was no exception.

Surely this is the only awards show in which celebrity royalty Beyonce and Jay-Z must tuck themselves inside a roundtable in a hotel ballroom like everyone else. Fellow 21st century legend like Taylor Swift was assigned to present the ho-hum Best Animated Movie category with Amy Poehler — about five years after the Saturday Night Live alum and Tina Fey playfully jabbed her dating life during their own hosting gig. ("Taylor Swift, you stay away from Michael J. Fox's son!"). And . . . wait, yes, this is confirmed: songwriter Bernie Taupin was on stage two more times than the great Martin Scorsese. Before tonight, I must confess I didn't even know what he sounded like.

Beyonce, Swift and Taupin with Elton John, along with Tony-winner Cynthia Erivo (Harriet) and the Frozen 2 team, were all nominees in the Best Original Song category — which arrived midway through the broadcast but given the ultra-stacked lineup, could have easily been saved to the end. With no obvious runaway like last year's "Shallow" from A Star Is Born, we had actual suspense on our hands. The winner? "I'm Gonna Love Me Again," which plays over the closing credits of the John biopic Rocketman. A rare John and Taupin co-write and win, they both accepted the award with their hearts wide open just a few minutes after they introduced Rocketman for Best Comedy/Musical to a standing ovation. "[The song] deals with our relationship . . . and a 52-year-old marriage . . . which doesn't happen very much in this town," said a visibly moved Taupin.

Beyonce and Swift will strike their gold in due time; it was never going to happen for a meh Lion King remake and Cats, respectively. Let the original diva reign supreme.

If "I'm Gonna Love Me Again" was a mild surprise, then Taron Egerton's win as Best Actor for a Musical or Comedy in Rocketman was a flat-out shock. No doubt he deserved it — just consider that Rami Malek won last year for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury for Bohemian Rhapsody doing a lip-synced performance while Egerton supplied his own vocals (and fit into all those sequined costumes) as the tortured John. But he also beat the heavily favored comeback king Eddie Murphy (Dolemite Is My Name). One of the best parts of roundtable set-up at the Golden Globes is that the actors must do an awkward walk-around en route to the stage. Egerton passed Murphy's table, where he was caught looking crestfallen and doing a polite golf-clap. He knew he was the favorite too. Now Egerton must be considered a Best Actor Oscar nominee contender.

And Renee Zellweger must be considered a Best Actress Oscar winner shoo-in. She triumphed in the Best Actress in a Drama category for her wonderful portrayal as Judy Garland, and I'm telling you, this was cemented way back in early September when Judy premiered at the Telluride Film Festival. Specifically, when we all heard Zellweger launch into an ever-wistful rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Accepting her award, she started imparting wisdom about Garland's legacy and how her humanity should serve as a reminder that the choices we make matter . . . until the orchestra piped in and she scurried off. Eh, she'll fine-tune it by the time the Oscars arrive on Feb. 9. In the meantime, every actor and actress will call their agents to see which other musical biopics are available.

But do the winners even matter in this context? After all, the Golden Globes are good times, Sunday-night-in-January-must-see because of the A-list party factor. Unlike other awards shows, a stately death montage is eschewed for time. We don't even hear the Best Original Song performances. In fact, the only person on stage who broke into song was West Side Story star Ansel Elgort, much to the giggly delight of co-presenter Dakota Fanning. All the above is fine by me. I'd rather get the privilege of seeing John chat with Carol Burnett during a commercial break and spend the rest of night guessing the conversation topic. And, lookie! Ageless wonders Jennifer Lopez and Paul Rudd are presenting Best Supporting Actor, and Jay-Z is presenting a drink to his wife.

That said, how fantastic would it have been had the cast of Cats rallied to perform a group number. Serving up an indelible Memory is always the best revenge.
